Yaesu VX-8DR

Yaesu_VX-8DRAs I mentioned in my Ham post, I mentioned that I purchased a Yaesu VX-8DR. This is still one of the top of the line HTs that Yaesu makes (it’s THE top of the line for their analog HTs, from what I can tell). It’s only been surpassed by the new digital line, from what I can tell, though I don’t believe either of their digital line HTs are IPX-7 certified (water resistance, etc). I basically wanted a radio that my son could get ahold of, and drop, or dunk, and not break.

So, first off, the radio is small. It’s basically as small as you could make it and still have it “fill” a “normal” hand. I have relatively normal size hands, and if it was any smaller, it would be pretty unusable. The buttons are pretty small, as people have commented on online, but the radio would get bigger if they were any bigger. There’s a lot of inputs here. If anything, the PTT button may be a bit small, but that actually prevents hitting it overly accidentally.

When I first got the radio, I didn’t have my callsign yet, so I was pretty paranoid about keying it up, but thankfully I got the callsign the next day. So that was nice.

The unit is a bit confusing to use. There is a ton of functionality there. It receives from 500khz to 999Mhz, it transmits on 4 bands (6m, 2m, 1.25M, and 70cm) ((More if you mod it)), has dual listen (can listen on two completely separate channels at once), and has AM/FM broadcast listening. So you can, in fact, listen to a local repeater, and an AM/FM broadcast as well. I found myself last night listening to a local, very active (because it was tied into the WIN system for “Insomniac”) repeater and a local FM radio station, or listening to the very local, yet dead repeater, and talking (when I could) on the more active WIN system repeater.

One tweak I would suggest Yaesu make if they continue with this design of radio… make the “volume” button configurable. The way it is with the VX-8DR is the main nob changes frequency, or channel (depending on if you’re in VFO or Memory mode), and you have to hold the Volume button to use the knob to change volume. I would like to reverse that, so volume is changed by default, and frequency is changed when holding that button.

Otherwise, the unit is great. It sounds great, feels great, and performs quite well with the standard rubber duck (I’ve just ordered a SMA to BNC adapter from Stephen Gulyas, and then a little stubby dual band antenna (Maldol MH-209) (should be good for events, or other close quarters talking, camping/hiking, or even chatting on local repeater), and a bigger whip style antenna (Diamond RH77CA). Sure, neither will do 6M, or 1.25M, but I haven’t really used them at all on this unit… maybe when I want to branch out I’ll pick up antennas for those purposes (6M on an HT generally means a big antenna, and poor results (you need more than 5W power), and 220Mhz requires something that I can’t seem to find easily (Smiley 27000?)).

All and all, I love the unit. I’m still searching for a good “pouch” for it that I can put on my bag, and unsure when I’ll buy the speaker/mic (it’s expensive). But, should be fun, and hopefully not lead to too many more purchases (at some point I’ll probably want something that’ll do true HF, but that’ll also require a license upgrade (at least General) for me for most of the HF bands).

TSI DP-Calc 8705

8705-DPCalcI recently had a complaint from someone staying at my house that the guest room stayed too warm when the door was closed. Knowing there was no air return vent in that room, I figured the door being closed was preventing good air flow. But, sadly, there was no good way to test this (with the tools I had). So, I went hunting on eBay for the proper tools, and found the TSI DP-Calc 8705 (a Micro-manometer) with no bids, for $15! Sure, it was listed as broken, but they admitted they just didn’t have the means/knowledge to test it. And the sticker had shown it was calibrated in 2012. So, I bought it. Even if it was broken, it would probably be a decent source of parts, or a good teardown to send to the EEVblog. =)

Unit arrived a couple weeks later, and was in amazing condition. Sure, it didn’t come with the RS-232 cable, or tubing, or static/pilot tubes, but I didn’t really need any of that for my purpose. It seems to register perfect, and I was able to go around my house and measure the pressure differentials with the door closed (sticking the more positive “sensor” tube under the door from the main part of the house into the room with the HVAC running). With that, I got the following results:

Bedroom 5.72 pascals (high)
Son’s room: 9.2 pascals (very high)
Bathroom: .747 pascals (great!)
Office: 3.48 pascals (high)

The US Department of Energy Energy Star homes standards for closed door pressure differentials at ≤3 pascals (0.01″wc) (undercutting doors), but using those numbers, it does seem like the gap under all my doors (except possibly the bathroom) is too small. I say possibly with the bathroom because excess pressure would just push out the bathroom fan exhaust. So my next quest will be to cut the door openings a bit larger and see how that changes things.

I also made a nice serial interface cable for the unit using an old DB-9 cable, and some RJ-45 ends. To figure out the pinout, I emailed TSI, and they sent me the whole schematic for the unit! The pinout is “backward” from right to left looking at an RJ-45 connector, but making the cable was pretty painless, and seems to work. The unit literally sends the measurement to the computer when you hit “Print” (just plain old ASCII). If you type “V” on the computer, it’ll echo back the current reading. Pretty simple, and could make for some fun experiments.

Overall, while the unit is pretty old relative to more modern units, it still does an amazing job, and is more than capable of doing what I need. Also, for reference, the tubing is 3/16″ ID and 5/16″ OD. I purchased some Tygon tubing from work and use that. I may buy some silicone tubing in the future…

DMMCheck Plus

DMMCheck PlusAs some may have realized, I have a decent number ((10, by last count)) of multimeters now but since all of them have been purchased second hand (eBay, or Goodwill), and several of them have been repaired, I had no real solid confidence in any of them as being highly accurate. Though, to be fair, I didn’t have any real reason to doubt them either. I did check in to see what calibration of one of my Keithley 196’s would cost, but the number was much more than I’d want to pay (I believe it was about $450). So, I’ve been eyeing a product called the DMMCheck Plus for a while. It provides a 5V DC and AC, 1mA DC and AC, some precision resistors (100R, 1k, 10k, 100k), and a 100Hz frequency to check your meters against. All of these are calibrated by the guy that makes them with his 8.5digit HP meter, that’s NIST traceable. Meaning I should be able to check against it for how far out of calibration any of my gear is.

I happened to have a PayPal balance, so I purchased my DMMCheck Plus through eBay and since they’re made up in southern Washington, I received it the day after shipped (I think from order to receipt was 3 days). The unit comes with a battery (which is how it’s calibrated), a hand filled in calibration sheet (showing the values for each test), number of burn in hours (mine was burned it for just over a month), and instructions. It’s really quite easy to use, and well worth the money, I think, to at least get a sense of how accurate your meters really are.

What I didn’t expect was what would be the most “in cal”. My Fluke 8060a that I purchased for about $40, replaced the caps on, and mainly have for nostalgia, was the most calibrated of my handheld meters. My Keithley 199 was the most in calibration of my bench meters. And amazingly (though not surprising given everything else I’ve seen with it), my Racal-Dana 1992 was amazingly accurate. The calibration of the 100Hz source says it should be 100.004608Hz, and my 1992 on a 10s gate showed 100.00463493Hz, or off by only 0.000026Hz ((Accounting for significant digits)). My other meters were all close enough for my work, and certainly not so far out that I’d pay for a calibration. I’ll definitely be double checking with this device now and again. Really makes me wish there was some ability to make a pocketable voltage reference that did 300mV, 3V, 30V, and 300V, as those are the ranges for my Keithley bench meters. But, battery driving for 30V and 300V, and getting a stable reference value might be tough. =(

Really, I’d highly suggest picking up one of these if you actually worry about your calibration for meters, or just have no idea how good or bad they are.
