Drobo B800i

We purchased a Drobo B800i at work during summer break, and initially, I must admit I was a bit confused about it’s functionality. I thought, at a block level, iSCSI device, it was basically a SAN with an internal controller. I was wrong. That functionality sounds like it’s reserved for the 1200i. The 800i, however, is more aptly referred to as a “virtual storage appliance” (or something like that). You throw drives in it (1-8), of any size, then you basically tell it you want volumes. They can be any size from 1TB to 16TB, and as many as 31 of them. They call it “thin provisioning”, and that’s an apt description. It’s much like a VM, only storage. Sure, you can have 30 volumes, all 16TB in size, but only have a single 500GB hard drive in the B800i. Would you want to? Probably not (what would be the point?).

Since purchasing it, and realizing it’s capabilities, I’ve had it take over the role of “backup”. It serves to host previous terms of class data, and our Crashplan PROe data. And by and large, it works very well for that. It’s hard to get real performance numbers that would be useful to most, since I knew it wouldn’t be used for anything needing high performance, and therefore only put Western Digital 2TB Green drives in it (5900RPM. Not fast). It works, and it seems to work well. My only complaint is the software. They MUST use discovery to find the Drobo, and mount the volumes. You can’t, for some reason, specify that there’s a Drobo at this address. Because of this, and some as-yet-unknown issue with the OS X Server firewall, it takes a while for the software to find the B800i, and mount the volumes. But I’m going to investigate this more in the future, or ask that Drobo allow manually specifying the location of the Drobo rather than requiring it be “found”. Also, the software seems to rely on the GPU rendering the interface, which causes issues when combined with Apple Remote Desktop (the software pegs the CPU). I’ve reported this to them, and they weren’t of much help.

All and all, I’m happy. And at the price per TB (weird that it’s gotten to that point), it’s hard to beat it for near-line backup storage. My rating, a full point off, is because of the software issues. The hardware seems quite solid.

Secret of Mana (iOS)

I have been a fan of Secret of Mana for years. I played it when it first came out for the SNES, and I’ve played most of the sequels that have been released since (none really compare). So when I saw that it was available for the iOS, I jumped on it, and by and large, I’ve been happy. The software itself works very well, it hasn’t crashed on me once, and the gameplay is just as I remember it, with one exception: the iPhone doesn’t have a d-pad.

I don’t know about most people, but my thumb/fingers do not easily glide on the iPhone screen. They kind of “stick” or “drag”. So the fact that this is how you move around the screen, takes some real getting used to. What also takes time is figuring out the wheel interface when you’re used to the SNES controller. It’s not very intuitive for a touch interface, but I’m sure they just wanted to leave the screen nice and simple, rather than adding more buttons.

Is the game what I remember? Yes. Complete with the seemingly endless grinding of weapons and magic. Is it as good as if Square-Enix had ported it to the Nintendo DS? No, no way. Several older Final Fantasy’s, and ChronoTrigger have both been ported to the DS, and vs. the version on iOS, the physical interface of the DS is far superior to the iOS’s virtual interface. Maybe the current generation of gamers will disagree, but if Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft can all weather the storm of “OMG, iPhone/Android gaming!” and continue to release good products/games, I think they’ll be fine. People still play board/card games because the interface is better than a digital version of the same game (Settlers of Catan is a lot easier, more fun, to play on the table top, than on the iOS). Sure, those companies may need a reality check, but the interface that’s BUILT for doing something is always going to win out over the generic interface, virtual or not.

All and all, the game is great. The interface, through very little fault of their own, sucks. I just hope Square-Enix ports the game to an actual gaming device at some point. Maybe I’ll just pick it up through the Virtual Console store.

Oregon Scientific AnyWear 3D Pedometer

As a late gift to myself for Christmas ((and to see if I would actually make use of something like a Fitbit)), I bought myself a clearance pedometer from REI just before the end of the year. It arrived the friday before new year, and since then I’ve been using it extensively (6 days now, woo). I can say, it works. It’s pretty no-frills, but you can pretty much wear it anywhere (I have it in my jeans coin-pocket), and it seems to keep good track. It auto resets at midnight, but keeps the previous 7 days of logs.

The only weird thing about it is there’s really no guide for setting for gait. I found a useful page online that details several methods, which I just used the equations:
Males: Height (in inches) * .415
Females: Height (in inches) * .413

And, being the stats junky I am, I have created a DB table, and a simple form for me to input my daily distances. I hope to keep up on this, but we shall see. You can see that info next to my energy usage, and Prius mileage.

All and all, it’s a good product. I probably wouldn’t have paid the retail $50 (actually, definitely wouldn’t have), but for $18, it’s a great deal for a pretty solid pedometer.
