Scotch Sealing Tape Dispenser H180

2014/02/26 By staze

Scotch H180I know it’s a little weird to review a tape gun, but when I do use packing tape, I tend to get pretty angry at cheap ones. This wasn’t helped by one of the little plastic ones (that are like a shell around a small roll of tape) exploding in my hand the other week. So, I finally decided to buy a tape gun for home. At work, we use the red Scotch Heavy Duty tape dispenser. It’s inexpensive, and works okay, but I’ve found that with the retracting blade, you never get a real easy/clean cut with the tape. Knowing this, I looked on Amazon, and EVERYONE pretty much pointed to the Scotch H180. Costs a bit more, doesn’t come with tape, but the blade does not retract, and the build quality seems much more commercial than “home”.

The basic test is how much effort does it take to A. Dispense tape on a box, and B. (more importantly), cut the tape with a wrist movement. With the red guns, the first part is fine, the second is hit or miss. You have to put enough pressure on the “guard” to get the blade to come out far enough to cut the tape reliably. Sometimes this works, many times it does not. With the H180, the process is basically so quick, you think the tape broke, but instead, you get a clean cut and the tape where you want it.

My only complaint is, the dispenser should have a loop, or hook, or something at the base of the handle to hang the whole thing by a nail/peg. I might just have to tie something on, because laying it on a shelf just seems silly.

TED 5000-G Try Two

2014/02/05 By staze

TED 5000-CAlthough I had very little positive to say about the TED 5000 with my last review, after looking at the alternatives, I couldn’t really find anything that matched it’s capability without being the eMonitor (which costs at least 5x as much, and has a subscription fee!). While there are some competitors (one clamps to your meter outside, and a couple use current clamps), none of those also wire into your electrical system to provide actual voltage readings (and therefore power factor). I did get one company to offer a review unit (which I could return if I didn’t like it, or buy for a discount if I did), but it too didn’t provide voltage information, but it also didn’t use Power Line Communication (PLC), so it avoided those issue).

So, knowing that TED (the company) wasn’t going to provide me with a review unit I swallowed my pride, and mailed off a check for the refurbished unit they had offered before.

Collision Repair

2014/02/01 By staze

Small rant.

I have a 2007 Prius. Back in July of 2013, I got rear ended. Or rather, my wife, unborn son, and I got rear ended. Anyway, the Auto body shop that is run by the dealer I bought the car from did the work, and after the aftermarket bumper didn’t fit, they put a real Toyota bumper on the car. Anyway, fast forward 5 months, and something starts to smell in the car. I search, and pull everything out I can think of. Smell goes away for a day or two, then comes back. So, I pull more out. Finally, I open the “hidden compartment” in the trunk, and wham, the smell hits me. I remove everything in there… smell is still there. Fine, I remove the compartment itself, and find a good 1/4-1/2″ of smelly yellowish liquid. I think it’s uncured epoxy resin or something, and head back to the body shop. They mop it up, and say “let us know”. Okay, so I take it back to a car wash, and run through. Viola, more liquid, though this time it obviously is car wash soapy water.

I make an appointment, and take the car back. They give me a free rental for the day, and stick the car in their shower… they find there was a missing piece of body panel sealant below the right tail light. They patched it up real quick, and stuck the car back in the shower, with no leaks.

So, the rant is… why the heck didn’t they stick it in the shower after the initial repair?! Gar… I really hate shoddy workmanship. Would have taken a few minutes, and saved me hours of looking for a smell in my car… plus, saved them the rental car, and time. It’s like insurance insisting on the aftermarket bumper that didn’t fit right… they had to buy both (aftermarket and OEM) because they tried to cheap out to start with. Gar!
