Cuecat

2011/04/19 By staze

CuecatToday I went to a local used technology shop (Next Step Recycling) and in the front case, they had a “Cuecat” for $3. Knowing that they work in Delicious Library, I snatched it up (along with a few other things), and headed home. After plugging it into a computer, and attempting a scan, I got a load of gibberish (not a recognizable barcode). A bit of googling later, I found this. Figuring that someone wouldn’t bother posting something like this to the net if it was wrong, I went ahead and took a small screwdriver to the pin indicated, and sheared it off the side of the chip. Total mod time was about 2 minutes, and most of that was finding a small/thin enough flathead blade to shear off the pin.

After putting it back together, I gave it a try, and viola, it gives a real barcode now. You might wonder why I purchased something like this? It’s mainly the size and the fact it works in DL2 (and on the iPad with a USB Camera Connection Kit adapter).

So how does it work as a barcode scanner? So-so. It sometimes takes multiple passes to get the code to read, but given it’s size, and cost, it’s well worth it. Previous to this, I carried around one of these any time I wanted to help someone with an inventory of their media library. It’s about 2-3x as big, and has it’s own issues.

For more info, albeit more geeky, and may/may not apply to your particular Cuecat (should you find one), see here, here (includes sample output before modification), and here.

Mobile Theme

2011/03/17 By staze

If you visit this site on a mobile device, you probably have just noticed that it looks a lot different now. This is thanks to the “WordPress Mobile Edition” plugin and theme from Alex King’s “Crowd Favorite”. Alas, install wasn’t as easy as it could be since the version listed on the WordPress site is old (non-WP3 compatible), and the new version has to be grabbed from svn.

All and all, it’s pretty easy.

Just CD into your wp-content/plugins directory, and do

svn co http://svn.wp-plugins.org/wordpress-mobile-edition/branches/wp3.0/ wordpress-mobile-edition

then go into WP, and enable the plugin.

You should then be mostly good to go. The only issue I have is the theme is really not up to WP3 spec… including having the wrong code for the “title” of the site for WP3, and especially using Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin.

Change in site organization

2010/07/17 By staze

Implemented a change in how my site is laid out today. Where posts used to be /year/month/day/postname/, they are now just /postname/. I think this makes the site a lot more logical, and certainly shortens the URLs. I’ve also removed the “category” “directory” for all my categories. So rather than my reviews being /category/reviews/, they’re now just at /reviews/.

All previous links should work, and will get a 301 redirect to the new location.

I’ll expect my pagerank to drop a bit until google reindexes everything.

Thanks go to two pages:

  • Redirecting Posts
  • Removing category base

Thanks. Hope it isn’t too traumatizing. =P
