Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides

2011/05/31 By staze

Last night Tara and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides. And by and large, it pretty much lived up to the franchise that has happened since the original (also taking into account distance from the original. If the original was a 4.5 star movie, the 2nd was a 4, the 3rd was a 3.5, etc). While we did miss Keira and Orlando, they were replaced with other characters that were “okay”. All and all, the movie felt like it had too many writers, and that rather than writing a real plot, they just threw in action. So really, it was more an action movie than the previous movies of the series.

It was visually very attractive, and I personally only had one point where I completely lost my suspension of disbelief… they were in a forest of Giant Bamboo…. which isn’t native to Florida (where the fountain of youth is supposed to be), and wouldn’t have existed during that time in Florida.

I also didn’t find myself laughing during any part of the movie. I do remember doing that when seeing the previous three movies. So really, the movie was “okay”. I’d recommend waiting until the movie is at the cheap theater before shelling out the money to see it, or wait until it’s on DVD and get it via Netflix. If you want to see a movie, go see Thor. It’s really the only other current movie I can recommend (haven’t seen any other current movies).

Toro Ultra Blower Vac (51599)

2011/04/23 By staze

Unfortunately, my neighbors have several large Douglas Fir trees that extend out over my driveway and thoroughly cover my driveway in needles every few weeks. Since I’ve bought the house, my fix for this was to borrow a pressure washer from someone, and wash the needles/moss off every 6-10 months. This took the better part of a day, but resulted in a pretty clean, yet more damaged, driveway (the driveway is original to the house (1978) and started out as a rather rough texture even then). One thing pressure washing DID do was remove the moss that grows on my driveway since it’s such a rough texture, and the aforementioned Douglas Fir’s keep it from getting much direct sunlight. But all and all, pressure washing to remove needles is a bit overkill. Enter, the leaf blower.

I’ll start by saying my wife was skeptical that a blower would be able to take care of the needles. But having read the Consumer Reports article on the blower vac, I was pretty confident it would work. After bringing it home, I fired it up and was immediately rewarded with needles, fir cones, twigs, and small rocks flying everywhere. I blew all the needles and everything off the driveway in less than 15 minutes, and in the end, I wasn’t covered in dirt and water. While it didn’t do anything to rid the driveway of moss, it did make the moss much more visible, and will probably aid in removal via pressure washing later (since I won’t have to deal with the fir needles as well as the moss).

I’ve since blown off the driveway again (a week later), and this time it went by very fast (5 minutes). I figure once a month will take about 10 minutes, and I should be able to greatly reduce the amount of needles tracked into my garage by the car, and into the house by people.

I haven’t tested the leaf vacuum aspect yet, but if it works half as well as the blower, I’ll be quite happy.

RadioShack Deluxe Cable Stripper

2011/04/02 By staze

Radioshack Deluxe Cable StripperOn the heels of my post relating to grounding your CATV, I thought I’d do a brief review on this inexpensive, capable coax stripper. I’d been looking online and at local hardware stores for a good quality coax stripper, and any of the really good ones were at least $30. Which, I’d be happy to pay if that’s what it would cost for a good stripper, but on a whim, I looked at RadioShack’s site, and found this, which gets decent reviews, and at the local Radioshack, was only $15! In my few tests, it does a great job, and quickly. After reading in depth about coax the last few days, I’ve read that nicking the conductor of coax when stripping it is bad, which I’m sure I’ve done on some of my crimps. So, over the next few days, I plan to redo several of the terminations in my house to perhaps improve my signal quality to my cable modem (the local demarcation point for CATV is about 10 feet from my house, so all my TV signals look great. I just hope to slightly improve my cable modem signal).

All and all, if you’re going to be doing anymore than a one off coax termination (in which case you might be able to get a friend, or a friendly cable installer to do), I’d highly recommend this stripper. Much cheaper ones are almost as expensive (I have one), and do a MUCH worse job. This one performs as well as any $25-30 I’ve seen.

The old downside being getting replacement blades. The local Radioshack I bought this from didn’t seem to have them, but from reviews, the blades should last some time, and replacement blades can be purchased online here.
