Since purchasing the Edgerouter X SFP a couple weeks ago, I realized that I wanted to upgrade my wireless network as well. I’ve been using my older Airport Extreme (5th Generation) in Bridge Mode to do my home networking, but I’ve been having odd issues with it when the cabinet its in is closed (I think it’s overheating). The Airport is rated up to 20W of power, which seems a bit extreme, but the device is a full on router, so there is some extra hardware in there. I had previously purchased a ceiling mount for the unit, and have it mounted in the middle of my house. This gives it very good range, with only a couple very small dead spots. But, the power usage, and the oddities with the overheating, made me decide it was time to jump to something better.
The Edgerouter X SFP supports Ubiquiti’s 24V Passive POE on all ports, so I figured I’d try one of their UniFi access points. They recently released their AC access points, but availability was very limited. I called/emailed a dozen or so places only to be told they were backordered for at least 2 months! Then, I found a place right here in Oregon, Invictus Wireless (which I would be traveling within a mile to for Christmas), and called them. They had one in stock! I purchased it, and had a family member pick it up since they were closing early for Christmas eve. =D
