Prius 2007, 4 years later

2010/12/09 By staze

4 years ago today, we got our first new car. We had put our name on the waiting list about 3 months earlier (early september). It was not a foolproof process, but we got the car we wanted, and have had very few problems with the car since.

We got the car with 3 miles on the odometer, and since then, we’ve driven an additional 57,493.4 miles (as of the time of writing). That amounts to 14,373 miles per year (which isn’t too far off the “normal” 12k miles per year most manufacturers claim. With those miles, we’ve put 155 tanks of gas in the car (1277.12 gallons), or $3804.33 worth of gas (which is an average of $2.98/gal). The lifetime average mileage, based only on those numbers is 45.02MPG. The actual current calculated MPG based upon the MPG of each tank, is 45.21MPG, so, pretty close.

Convert VMware Fusion to Parallels

2010/11/09 By staze

This is just a quick post since it seems Parallels doesn’t have this information posted anywhere on their site.

I am making the conversion from VMware Fusion to Parallels at the advice of a friend who said Parallels was faster. But the problem is, I have about 10 VMware Virtual Machines, so I really would like to convert them.

Put simply, it’s easy (albeit slow).

Just go to “File” and “Open” and open the VMware HD image. Done and done. One would think “Import” is the better description, but, it’s “Open”.

Have fun!

Barrel of Munkis

2010/10/17 By staze

A year or so ago, a chunk of my client base (the employees of the school), complained that they often didn’t have the same–or rather most recent–software. This presented an issue since our primary method of deploying new software was just re-imaging machines. Given all our employee machines have local accounts, re-imaging would be a serious task. So we started thinking about it, and started drawing up early plans for converting everyone over to PHDs. But, that was going to be a heck of a task, and there doesn’t seem to be an established way of doing it (something I’m still investigating since it’s still on the list of tasks).

But then in the last few months, I heard about Puppet, and via that, Munki. They’re very similar tools, but Munki gives more attention to the GUI interface for users to say “Yes, I want to logout and run these updates”. Puppet does this all in the background.
