HP LJ 9050 and the annoying 49.ff08 error

October 19th, 2009 staze No comments

This is a random note.

For months/years now, our primary student printer here at work has gotten random 49.ff08 errors that require removing the job from the print server, and cycling the power on the printer. We haven’t been able to find a cause, and firmware updates of both the JetDirect and Printer have resulted in no change.

So, last week, I got a 512MB stick of ram for the printer, installed it (replacing the 128MB OEM stick that was in there), and the issue has gone away. We haven’t had the problem in a about a week, which is a record.

Now, I’m not sure if this was due to the OEM stick being faulty, or 128MB not being enough memory for the jobs the printer was receiving, but all and all, I’m happy. After upgrading, I did find a place in the manual that says if you’re printing a lot of duplex jobs, or jobs on 11×17, then more than the stock 128MB is suggested. Wow, go figure, all we print are duplex jobs, and a lot of 11×17.

So, for anyone else that is having this problem, go buy more memory for your 9050 and give that a try.

Here’s the memory we used (from Provantage) : Kingston LJ9050/512

Hackintoshing Dell Mini 10v

October 6th, 2009 staze No comments

So, after successfully hackintoshing a Dell Mini 9, today I got to do a 10v.

Issue 1: Brand new from Dell, it has A06 bios. This needs to be downgraded to A04. Here’s that info: http://mydellmini.com/forum/dell-mini-10-guides/12408-downgrade-your-mini-10v-bios-a04-requires-windows.html

Issue 2: The process has evolved a lot in a couple months. Now, you can just run a single .app against a thumbdrive that’s been “Restored” with the 10.5.6 dmg, and it will take care of the rest. That app is called NetbootBootMaker.app. Info on that can be found here: http://osx.mechdrew.com/guides/nbi1.shtml

Other than that, it seems pretty cut and dry. The only issue I had was rebooting after installing the 10.5.8 Combo update. It seems to need the thumbdrive attached when that is done.

Back at work

June 1st, 2009 staze No comments

Friday I came back to work. It was fairly uneventful. The weekend proved to be hot, and resulted in a lot of indoor work on the laundry room, the garage, and the shed. Everything looks pretty darn good.

Today, I’ve been making more progress with Apple (AFP has been acting worse the last few days, but they’ve given me some things to try), and we’re starting to lay out plans for our summer work. It should be a fairly steady summer, I’m hoping.

This is a rather short post because I can’t really think of much to say. Oh! Comparing my TED to my Utility bill pretty much was dead on. Since I’m not tracking total KWH/day by the hour, and I don’t know when the utility meter reader was at the house, I can only assume that anything within about 1-2% between the bill and the TED is pretty darn close. Great to know! Now I just wish they had a “TED” for water usage.

Here’s hoping for some Thunderstorms this evening!

Have a good week. Hopefully I’ll post more.

Still sick

May 27th, 2009 staze No comments

Yesterday I went to the doctor and got a throat swab taken. After the lab tests, it came back negative for Strep, so, it’s a virus. yay. While the fever seems to have gone, my throat still hurts like hell, and the congestion can gotten worse. So, I’ve stayed home yesterday and today. Not sure about tomorrow yet.

Can’t really discuss anything that Apple has told me recently. Only that progress has been made, good or bad.

I haven’t done a whole lot the last few days other than sleep. Ah well…

Sick

May 25th, 2009 staze No comments

So, my event filled Memorial Day weekend was truncated by a fever and sore throat yesterday, and now just a sore throat today. This has probably been coming on for a week or so since I’ve been having pretty bad congestion on my Eustachian tubes have been clogged.

The only things we did get done were to clean the garage (much needed, and it’s SOO much better now), to get the bed out of the office, and to run the soaker hose around the blueberries. The sawdust seems to do an amazing job at keeping the soil moist. Even after a week of no rain, and fairly warm days, sticking a finger down into the sawdust reveals moisture about 2 inches down. We figure running the soaker hose for 30 minutes once or twice a week should be plenty for the blue’s.

If my throat doesn’t get better tomorrow, I’m going to hit the doctors office. I have chores piling up (mowing the yard, for example). That, and having a sore throat is about the most uncomfortable symptom I can think of, since it’s nagging.

You might notice the “reviews” page that has shown up. I’m hoping to do some short, one off reviews on various items. We’ll see how that goes… look for the first one in a week or two.

Well, take care.
