Cucina Pro 1476 Classic Round Belgian Waffle Maker

2012/02/15 By staze

A few weeks ago I went to make waffles with my trusty Cuisinart and found that after 4 years of use, the non-stick coating had finally given way to something “not non-stick”, resulting in impossible to remove waffles. So, I threw it away, and went on the search for a replacement. Everyone raved about the Villaware waffle maker, but they seemed to have stopped making them. After some more looking, I found that the Cucina Pro is actually the same machine, just new name. After sitting on it for a few days, wondering if I should order one, I hit up one of the nicer kitchen supply stores in the area, Cooks, Pots and Tabletops, and found they had the Cucina Pro 1476 for an Amazon level price. Purchased, I went home, and immediately made some waffles.

First off, it’s heavy. My Cuisinart maybe weighed 2lbs. I think the CucinaPro weighs in at 4lbs. So it takes a while to warm up (and conversely, cool down). First use, it gave off a bit of smoke as the protective coatings cooked off, and had a bit of a smell, but it went away after use. The Waffle Tone is a bit odd too, but nice. You can go do something in another room, and hear when the waffle is done. With the batter I use, I have it set to 5 (out of 6) on the doneness scale, and it produces a crispy waffle. Doneness is quite good, and the waffle overall was probably one of the best I’d had. The only odd thing being the “look” of the doneness. You could see a line where part of the waffle was lighter than another. This either has to do with how I poured the batter, or the lack of an expanding hinge in the back. Either way, this is cosmetic, and didn’t affect taste.

All and all, it’s a great waffle iron. And for only $20 more than the Cuisinart, it makes a much crispier, tastier, product.

Toyota Customer Service HID Headlight replacement Saga

2012/02/02 By staze

This post is a bit of a rant on my ongoing HID replacement Saga, but at this point, I’m rather pissed at the dealer, and Toyota corporate.

I’ve owned two Toyota’s in my life ((since I’m only been driving for 10 years, and my Prius is 5 years old at this point…)). I had a ’96 Camry that alas, I wrecked, but got fixed and drove for another couple years. Then, in 2006, I ordered a 2007 Prius Touring that by and large has been a great car… once I got it ((I ordered it, and they proceeded to get in a car for me, only to turn around and sell it to someone else “accidentally”. They managed to get another one a week or two later (or something like that), but offered no real apology for selling “my” car)). But, starting shortly after having it serviced, I started getting the problem where the HID headlights would flicker, and then shut off. You could “fix” this by turning the lights off, and back on… but sometimes they’d go out several times during a night drive, which was no only annoying, but seriously dangerous.

APC AP9584 Serial to USB adapter with a Smart-UPS.

2012/02/02 By staze

So, I ended up with a SU1400 Smart-UPS as a castoff from campus network services, and alas, it only has a serial (RS-232) port, not USB, and I’m attaching it to a Mac. So, I went online, and found out that lo, APC makes something to address that (only officially, it only works with the Back-UPS models). $37 later, I had the adapter, and plugged it in. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Neither Mac nor PC would see the adapter was there. I figured it was dead, and prepared to RMA. But, on a whim, I decided to try putting a smart-signaling cable between it, and the UPS. Viola! My Mac instantly saw there was a UPS there. So, the adapter must be getting power from the serial side, and not the USB side. Weird.

Anyway, thought I should share that piece of knowledge. So, not only do you need the adapter (AP9584), but you need a APC Smart Signaling cable (2 meters 940-0024, or 15 feet 940-1524). Or, just make your own following the info on the apcupsd site.
